“Kiki’s Delivery Service” author still writes at 91
In July 2026, Eiko Kadono is 91 years old. She lives in Kamakura, a town near Tokyo. She wrote "Kiki's Delivery Service," a book about a young witch. Studio Ghibli, a Japanese animation company, made it into a movie in 1989. Kadono still writes every day, slowly with a keyboard. But she first writes every story by hand. She wants readers to imagine her stories clearly.
Kadono was a homemaker before she became a writer. She started writing after living in Brazil for two years. Her daughter's drawing of a witch gave her the idea for Kiki. In 2018, Kadono won the Hans Christian Andersen Award, a top prize for children's book authors.
There is a Kiki museum in Tokyo. Fans can see many books there and buy merchandise. A new book, "Kiki and the New Magic," will come out in English in August 2026. Kadono says only books can help people create and imagine now.
