Reindeer races bring crowds to Finland
Salla, Finland, is famous for traditional reindeer racing in winter. Every year, the Salla Reindeer Cup brings local people, reindeer owners, and visitors together to watch fast reindeer run on snow in the cold northern weather. During the race, the reindeer pull people on skis.
Reindeer work has been important in Scandinavia for many years, especially for the Sami people who live in the far north. In Salla, reindeer racing started in the 1950s and is now an organized sport with trained male reindeer and clear rules for each race.
A reindeer named Pompom won the final race in 2026 and became the champion of the Salla Reindeer Cup. Pompom’s owner, Hannu Krupula, said it is very fast, clever, and truly special. After the race, the reindeer got their favorite food, lichen, as a small reward.
