Thousands of Vespas fill Rome for the scooter’s 80th birthday
More than 10,000 Vespa scooters filled the streets of Rome on June 27. Riders came from Europe, America, Australia, and Asia to celebrate the Vespa's 80th birthday. They drove around the Colosseum, a famous old building, and past other historic landmarks. During the celebration, fans bought Vespa souvenirs such as hats and jackets. The most popular item was a limited-edition helmet made for the birthday.
The little scooter is loved around the world. It became famous in 1953 because of the film "Roman Holiday." In the movie, the actor Gregory Peck gave the actress Audrey Hepburn a romantic ride through Rome. For many, a Vespa means Italian style, freedom, and nostalgia.
The Vespa was first produced after World War II. Piaggio, an Italian company, made airplanes, but bombs destroyed its factory. It then built small scooters and named them "Vespa." The word means "wasp" in Italian. The first one appeared in 1946. Piaggio sold about 20 million and now sells them in 110 countries.
