Tiny museum turns a quiet alley into a lively place

The Hattiesburg Pocket Museum — also known as "Mississippi's Tiniest Museum" — is located in downtown Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Vicki Taylor and her husband Rick opened it in 2020 during the COVID-19 shutdown, hoping to bring joy and traffic to the city's downtown. It started as a small window display behind the Saenger Theater, but has since grown into a major community hub and tourist destination.

Today, the museum features a tiny art gallery, a movie theater, colorful murals, a keychain and DVD exchange, a rainbow bridge for the collars of departed pets, and a motion-activated dance spot that plays music along with disco lighting.

Since opening, more than 300,000 people have visited, and Hattiesburg's tourism economy has grown by more than 40%. Local artists have also benefited, using the alley as a platform to build their careers and confidence.

One visitor summed it up well: "You may come feeling down, but you're going to leave excited."

For Taylor, the museum is about showing people the city she loves. "Hattiesburg is not a beach town, and it doesn't have mountains," she said. "There's got to be something to get people to come off the highway."
