Japanese students create blackboard art together in a national contest
Every year, high school students across Japan take part in a national art contest called Kokuban Art Koshien. "Koshien" is a famous stadium where high school baseball is played, and "kokuban" means blackboard in Japanese. Students use colorful chalk to create pictures in teams.
The competition began in 2015. About 300 high schools and junior high schools join. Students draw dinosaurs, animals, famous paintings, and scenes from daily life.
Working with a group is not always easy. Kento Misumi took part in the contest as a high school student. He remembers how hard it was to deal with different opinions in his group.
Students at Kumagaya Girls' High School, north of Tokyo, face the same challenge. Chiho Ninomiya said, "It's our first time so I'm not sure we will be able to do a good job." But she added that the contest is a chance to become better friends, even without a prize.
